UK ETA Photo Requirements: How to Avoid Rejection
This is the most common reason for delay. The system uses AI to verify your face against your passport chip. Follow these strict rules for your digital upload or selfie:- Background: Must be plain and light-colored (cream, light grey, or white). No patterned wallpaper or other people visible.
- Lighting: Even lighting. No shadows on your face or behind your head.
- Expression: Neutral. Mouth closed. Eyes open. Do not smile.
- Glasses: Remove them. Even clear lenses can cause glare that confuses the AI.
- Head coverings: Permitted for religious reasons, but your full facial features (from chin to forehead and both edges of the face) must be clearly visible.

Processing Time & Validity
- Time: Decisions typically take 3 working days. Many app users receive approval within hours, but never rely on this. Apply at least 72 hours before your flight.
- Validity: The ETA lasts for 2 years or until your passport expires—whichever comes first.
- Travel: It allows multiple entries. You can visit London, return to Muscat, and go back to Manchester later without reapplying.
Travelling with Children and Babies
There is no “family application.”- Every traveler needs their own ETA. This includes newborns.
