Every engineer who has quoted twenty boards has had the same reaction: the unit price is four times the volume price, and the volume price was for a quantity nobody needs yet. The instinct is to assume somebody is taking advantage. Usually nobody is. Small-batch assembly costs what it costs because most of the work happens before the first board moves.

Understanding where the money goes is the fastest route to a cheaper quote, because roughly half of a low-volume bill is under your control.
