What is Corten Steel?
Corten Steel, also known as weathering steel, is a group of steel alloys developed to eliminate the need for painting. It naturally forms a stable, rust-like appearance after exposure to weather. This outer rust layer serves as a protective barrier, preventing deeper corrosion and making it highly durable for outdoor use. The name “Corten” is derived from two properties: corrosion resistance and tensile strength. Corten steel is widely used in architecture, construction, bridges, and sculptures due to its distinctive appearance and resistance to weather elements.
The primary benefit of Corten steel is that it maintains structural integrity over time without requiring maintenance like painting or sealing. It has a longer lifespan than ordinary steel and performs especially well in marine, humid, and industrial environments. Its rustic aesthetic has made it a favorite for modern architectural designs and landscape elements.
Corten steel is available in two primary grades—Corten A and Corten B—each tailored for specific types of applications. The steel includes copper, chromium, nickel, and phosphorus, which give it unique self-protecting qualities. This low-alloy steel is also recyclable and eco-friendly, aligning with sustainable construction practices.
